Library

Ascension students in grades 1 - 5 visit the library once a week. They learn library skills, learn about authors, study literature, write, and do fun reading-related projects. Student may check out books every week.

Fancy Nancy

Ascension’s first grade had a very special visitor this fall.  Jane O’Connor, author of the popular Fancy Nancy series! Thanks for the author visit, Mrs. Flowers!

Grade 1

For the last two years, Mrs. Flowers and Mrs. Allen have worked together to produce Ascension's Literary magazine, "Ascension Reads."

Story Time

Mrs. Flowers helped Ascension students gather 1,600 books in 33 boxes in their 2006 Books for Buddies program.  The books went to the children of Catalyst Charter School - Howland and St. Angela's in Chicago.  Ascension parishioner Betty Vandervest teaches at Catalyst and expressed the gratitude of her school community.

Congratulations to Mrs. Flowers, Ascension's outstanding librarian, who was chosen in 2009
as one of two Archdiocesan Heart of the School Award winners in the "Behind the Scenes" category.

Fall Update from the Library

Grade 1          First graders are happily checking out library books each week. Ask your child about the “Miss Nelson” mysteries and Miss Viola Swamp!

Grade 2          After reading the Mr. Tanen’s Ties books by Maryanne Cocca-Leffler, students created their own theme ties which were laminated and will be used as bookmarks.

Grade 3          Author! Author! Our third grade writers were busy creating scary stories to submit to the Pioneer Press in their annual Halloween contest. All stories were copied and compiled to make our own 3rd grade scary stories book soon to be available for check out in the library.

Grade 4          4th graders started the year with a dictionary and alphabetizing review. Students are now busy creating their own campaign platforms and posters in a mock election in the library. Ask your child if they’ve had their turn in the Poet’s Corner to recite their favorite poem yet?

Grade 5          Book talks and recommendations! Students love to share their favorite books. Our walls are covered with the 5th graders good tips. Mrs. Flowers is reading aloud a favorite historical fiction novel, Nory Ryan’s Song by Patricia ReillyGiff. It’s the heartwarming tale of a family’s struggle to come to America during the Irish potato famine of the 1840’s.
