Ascension History

Ascension celebrated its Centennial in grand style in 2007.  As part of the year's events we spent a great deal of time learning about our past.  As graduates of Ascension School, you are part of our story!  If you would like to read more about Ascension, use this link for an order form for our parish centennial book.

P.S. Ascension School will be one hundred in 2012.  If you'd like to help plan this milestone, contact the Advancement Office,

Help us find your classmates!

The biggest challenge of getting an alumni program underway is maintaining the database. Of the 5,000 plus students who have graduated from Ascension
we have about 4,300 names but only
3,000 addresses.

With each mailing, we request 'address change' information from the post office, and we receive
70 - 80 changes.

Some of them
come back with forwarding addresses but most of them simply inform us
"forwarding order expired." We are, apparently, quite a nomadic people!

We know that you know where some of these people are and we're asking you to help us get in touch with them.

So please, take a look at these files and let us know if your brother is
listed there, or your father or your cousin or your neighbor. Let us know, too,if you are certain that someone listed has passed away. (We are reluctant to accept hearsay evidence for obvious reasons!)

Thanks for your help! We look forward to a deluge of e-mail, phone calls, notes in our mailbox….

P. S. While we're talking about the database: are we spelling your name correctly?
Do we have your married and maiden names straight? Do we have you in the right class?
Please let us know!

Memorial Brick Dedication

Phase one memorial bricks were blessed in a ceremony on Sunday, September 12. Alumni, current school families, parishioners and their friends gathered for the chance to take pictures of the brick they had had inscribed, enjoy a piece of cake and see old friends.

We are currently taking orders for the bricks that we will plant in phase two of this project. Please let us know if you are interested in purchasing a brick to honor a friend, a member of your family, a classmate, or your own Ascension School days. Click here for more information.

Looking at bricks

From top:the Trainor family needed two bricks to cover the two generations of Trainors at Ascension. Matt and Mary Deady, both class of 1967, were happily in town for a wedding and enjoyed visiting Ascension. Jeannie Gubbins, class of 1954, (extreme right) was given her brick as a gift from her family, several of whom were able to join us for a piece of cake. Looking for bricks was a favorite activity during the reception following the dedication.

The Centennial Project

The Ascension Ambassadors, sixth, seventh and eighth graders committed to serving their community and learning more about Ascension's history, launched the Centennial Project early in 2009. Working with the Advancement Office, the Ambassadors wrote to over 1,100 alumni, asking that they complete a survey and send us a record of their memories of Ascension School.  The Ambassadors drafted the letter with the help of their Language Arts teacher, Ms. Katrina Vainisi and addressed the envelopes by hand.  With the letter, the Ambassadors sent an Ascension Alumni Data Sheet which will collect new alumni data and help build a record of family relationships in the alumni database.  The mailing included a return envelope addressed to the Ambassadors who sent the letter; the Ambassadors will help to record alumni responses.

The other piece of the Centennial Project will be a "e-campaign" designed to capture as many email addresses for alumni as possible.  In February, the Advancement Office will begin a "Charger Chain Letter" with a goal of establishing e-communication with all alumni.  Watch this page for reports of our progress!

Ascension's First Annual

Gold Brunch

Sunday, June 22, 2008

Nearly one hundred of Ascension's "gold alumni" gathered in June for our first Gold Alumni Brunch. Our guests enjoyed a lovely liturgy, happy memories shared with old friends, and Kate Seavey's delectable food, served by Ascension's dedicated Ambassadors.  Thanks to everyone who helped put this special day together, and to those who took advantage of the opportunity to come home to Ascension.

The Brunch benefits the Reese Family & Ascension Alumni Scholarship Fund

All proceeds from the brunch will become part of the Reese Family & Ascension Alumni Scholarship Fund.  Opened in 2007, the Reese Family fund is held at Chicago Community Trust and will provide, through its earnings, financial aid to Ascension families who could not otherwise afford tuition.  George ('52) and Mike ( '55) Reese challenge all alumni, but in particular their classmates from the early fifties, to help us build the fund.

Gifts for this fund can be sent directly to Ascension School at 601 Van Buren, Oak Park, IL 60304.  Please indicate that your gift should be directed to the Reese Family Fund.

Thinking about

a class reunion?

Reunions are crucial to the development of our alumni program – nothing we do to invite alumni to get involved at Ascension is as effective as a class gathering and only you, as an alum, can schedule and plan a reunion.
There is much that we can do, though, to help, and we love doing it!
Please click here for a downloadable pdf:  Reunion Guidelines.

Sixth Annual Alumni & Friends Golf Outing 2008

We had a lovely, 95% dry day for our outing this year. Eighty golfers enjoyed a great day at Big Run Golf Club -- challenged by the course but heartened by the company of good friends. With the proceeds from the outing this year, Ascension School will open an endowment fund through the Archdiocese of Chicago.  For more information about the outing, the endowment or alumni programs at Ascension, please contact our development office at 708-434-1558.
