Ascension History

Ascension celebrated its Centennial in grand style in 2007.  As part of the year's events we spent a great deal of time learning about our past.  As graduates of Ascension School, you are part of our story!  If you would like to read more about Ascension, use this link for an order form for our parish centennial book.

P.S. Ascension School will be one hundred in 2012.  If you'd like to help plan this milestone, contact the Development Office, 708-434-1558.

Help us find your classmates!

The biggest challenge of getting an alumni program underway is maintaining the database. Of the 5,000 plus students who have graduated from Ascension
we have about 4,300 names but only
3,000 addresses.

With each mailing, we request 'address change' information from the post office, and we receive
70 - 80 changes.

Some of them
come back with forwarding addresses but most of them simply inform us
"forwarding order expired." We are, apparently, quite a nomadic people!

We know that you know where some of these people are and we're asking you to help us get in touch with them.

So please, take a look at these files and let us know if your brother is
listed there, or your father or your cousin or your neighbor. Let us know, too,if you are certain that someone listed has passed away. (We are reluctant to accept hearsay evidence for obvious reasons!)

Thanks for your help! We look forward to a deluge of e-mail, phone calls, notes in our mailbox….

P. S. While we're talking about the database: are we spelling your name correctly?
Do we have your married and maiden names straight? Do we have you in the right class?
Please let us know!

Ascension's First Annual

Gold Brunch

Sunday, June 22, 2008

Nearly one hundred of Ascension's "gold alumni" gathered in June for our first Gold Alumni Brunch. Our guests enjoyed a lovely liturgy, happy memories shared with old friends, and Kate Seavey's delectable food, served by Ascension's dedicated Ambassadors.  Thanks to everyone who helped put this special day together, and to those who took advantage of the opportunity to come home to Ascension.

The Brunch benefits the

Reese Family & Ascension Alumni Scholarship Fund

All proceeds from the brunch will become part of the Reese Family & Ascension Alumni Scholarship Fund.  Opened in 2007, the Reese Family fund is held at Chicago Community Trust and will provide, through its earnings, financial aid to Ascension families who could not otherwise afford tuition.  George ('52) and Mike ( '55) Reese challenge all alumni, but in particular their classmates from the early fifties, to help us build the fund.

Gifts for this fund can be sent directly to Ascension School at 601 Van Buren, Oak Park, IL 60304.  Please indicate that your gift should be directed to the Reese Family Fund.

Sixth Annual

Alumni & Friends

Golf Outing

We had a lovely, 95% dry day for our outing this year. Eighty golfers enjoyed a great day at Big Run Golf Club -- challenged by the course but heartened by the company of good friends. With the proceeds from the outing this year, Ascension School will open an endowment fund through the Archdiocese of Chicago.  For more information about the outing, the endowment or alumni programs at Ascension, please contact our development office at 708-434-1558.

Many thanks to our outing sponsors:

The Class of 1967 had a great time at Molly Malone’s in November as they met to celebrate the fortieth anniversary of their graduation.  Dave Devine brought his sax and joined classmate Dave Muriello and his band on a few numbers.    “Let’s not wait forty years to get together again!”

Class '57

The Class of 1957 worked for months to find their classmates and then brought them to the Pine Room for one grand party on November 3.  The committee, headed by Larry Woods, Larry Hughes and Terry O'Brien, developed their own web site and ended up with about 90% of their classmates -- 58 of whom came to the party!  Elvis was in attendance as well!  The dinner was catered by Maya del Sol, Oak Park's new "Latin fusion" restaurant.
