Wonders of the World

To conclude our study of rocks, the students of the 6th grade looked at some of the Wonders of the World.  Each of the Wonders that the 6th graders chose from were made of rock. Their assignment was to recreate the monument and construct a travel brochure about the area the monument is in, and the rocks used to build it.  I was very impressed by the attention to detail that the students used.  Some monuments were made of food such as cupcakes, sugar cubes and marshmallows; while others were made from expandable foam, Legos, clay, sand and styrofoam and cardboard. Some of the monuments that the students replicated were Petra, Taj Mahal, The Great Wall of China and Christ the Redeemer.  I just want to say thank you to all the students for their hard work, and to any of the parents that got supplies, had work dates at their house, carried in projects, or that helped in building in any way.

The Cell

During their unit about cell the 7th graders did documentaries about how a cell is related to our school.  They compared the bricks on the outside of the building to cell walls and the hallways to endoplasmic reticulum’s.  We will end our study of cells and genes with a chapter about heredity and how our features can come from our parents.

The Periodic Table

Throughout our study of the elements of the periodic table, the 8th grade students had to expand their knowledge of one element or a family of elements. They could showcase their knowledge in one of four ways a poem and a collage, a comic book, trading cards or a song or a rap.  Although I was very impressed with all of the projects, these three songs or raps were outstanding.  The musical talent in this 8th grade class is amazing.
