Junior High Math

All the 6th and 7th grade math classes and the 8th grade pre-algebra class are taught by Mrs. Pat Ganzel.  The Algebra 1 class is taught by Ms. Mary Jo McEnery 

6th Grade Math
The 6th grade students use Math Connects, Course 1, 2012 edition, by Glencoe McGraw-Hill.  This textbook is aligned to the new Common Core Standards for all Illinois 6th grade students.  Each student has a hard copy of the textbook and their own digital edition online through the website, www.connected.mcgraw-hill.com.  The 6th grade classes meet daily, during periods 8 and 9.

7th Grade Math
The 7th grade students use Math Connects, Course 2, 2012 edition, by Glencoe McGraw-Hill.  This textbook is aligned to the new Common Core Standards for all Illinois 7th grade students.  Each student has a hard copy of the textbook and their own digital edition online through the website, www.connected.mcgraw-hill.com.  The 7th grade classes meet daily, during periods 4 and 6.

8th Grade Math
The 8th grade students are divided into 3 classes. Two of the classes use Pre-Algebra, 2012 edition, by Glencoe McGraw-Hill. This textbook is aligned to the new Common Core Standards for all Illinois 8th grade students. Each student has a hard copy of the textbook and their own digital edition online through the website, www.connected.mcgraw-hill.com. These classes are taught by Mrs. Ganzel daily, during periods 1 and 2. One of the classes uses Algebra 1, 2010 edition, by Glencoe McGraw-Hill. Their goal is to prepare for accelerated high school algebra. This class is taught by Ms. McEnery daily, during period 1.

Math Team meets on Tuesdays (after school) 3:05 – 3:50 for interested 7th and 8th graders. Beginning on January 10th, 2013 Math Team practices change to Thursday lunch for 6th and 7th grade students Team practices are for preparation for upcoming competitions.

 Math Team students took 3rd place at Nazareth's 8th grade math contest, with Bill placing 1st.

Four students represented Ascension at the Montini HS 7th Grade Academic Bowl on January 15th.  They were 3-2 in match play. Congratulation!

Congratulations to Christian, who won 3rd place in the Science portion of the Montini Academic Bowl in January!

 

Seventeen Ascension students in 6th, 7th and 8th grades competed in the Montini High Math Contest on Saturday, November 10.  Bill McNulty placed third and John Pollard placed fifth in Individual competition.  for mid-sized schools, among thirty-eight schools with 470 students.
 John Pollard also placed third in the St. Laurence /Queen of Peace Math Contest on November 3.

Ascension participated in two academic bowls recently: at Nazareth Academy (top) and at Trinity High School.

Christian Steinhofer, Connie McNulty, Margaret Planek and Tim Daughtry represented Ascension at Montini High School's 2nd Annual Quiz Bowl for 7th grade students.  They were 3-2 in match play, and Christian won 3rd place in the Science competition.  This month Christian, Connie, Margaret, Kate Mackie, Serena and Kieran Daley, Max Wink, Jacob Marchetti, and Dylan Bartlett represented Ascension at Nazareth's 7th Grade Academic Bowl.  Our Blue team made it to the final 4 out of 16 teams.

3.14 is Pi Day

Junior high math students celebrate March 14 (or 3.14) as "Pi Day" by eating. . . pie, naturally! Students and Mrs. Ganzel brought pies, and Ms. McEnery brought Pi-shaped cookies and pretzels!
