Welcome to Ascension Kindergarten! |

Mrs. Jody Parrilli |
We're excited to announce that Ascension will open two full-day kindergarten classrooms in the fall of 2010. All kindergarteners will have the option of a half-day program (mornings) and they may move to full-day at any point in the school year. Tuition will be reassessed and prorated from the day the change is made. The classes will be held in the current kindergarten and PK4 classrooms. No staffing decisions have been made as of January 2010. The tentative schedule for kindergarten will be from 8 am until 3 pm. The half-day would begin at 8 and end at 11:40.
The preparation for this change in our program has been extensive and exhilarating, with great care being taken to consider the needs of the school community, the family, but most importantly the kindergarten student. Research indicates clearly that today's five year old is ready to be in school for a longer day. They are more relaxed at school because there is time for a more child-centered approach to the daily scheduled.
In the new structure, Ascension will continue to offer a kindergarten program that combines both play and academics. To accommadate those families that opt for the half-day, most academic work will take place in the morning. "Specials" such as gym, art and music, will take place in the afternoon.

Academically, the focus of kindergarten includes both reading readiness and math readiness. Reading readiness involves letter formation, letter sounds, journal writing and exposure to various types of text and opportunities to respond to the text. In addition to reading readiness, students are exposed to various math concepts such as patterns, sorting, graphing, number sense, quantity, size and other comparisons. Religious studies, science, and social studies are also worked into the student’s everyday activities through a student-centered, active learning approach.
The goal of the kindergarten program is to offer students a safe place to learn and grow. By the time students complete the kindergarten program they are ready for the challenges and the increased independence of 1st grade. It is our privilege to watch our kindergartners grow and develop during this exciting time in their lives.
