Ascension School Kindergarten Program

Ascension offers a kindergarten program that combines both play and academics.  While engaging in play, students are able to explore the world around them as well as make observations.  Through touching, manipulating, exploring and testing, children find out about the world around them. By interacting with other children and adults, they find out about themselves and their relationship to others. When given opportunities to play, children imitate adults and experiment with what it means to be a caregiver, a fisher, a firefighter, a doctor and so on. Through play, they learn how to solve problems and work cooperatively with others.  

Academically, the focus of kindergarten includes both reading readiness and math readiness.  Reading readiness involves letter formation, letter sounds, journal writing and exposure to various types of text and opportunities to respond to the text.  In addition to reading readiness, students are exposed to various math concepts such as patterns, sorting, graphing, number sense, quantity, size and other comparisons.  Religious studies, science, and social studies are also worked into the student’s everyday activities through a student-centered, active learning approach.

The goal of the kindergarten program is to offer students a safe place to learn and grow.  By the time students complete the kindergarten program they are ready for the challenges and the increased independence of 1st grade.  It is our privilege to watch our kindergartners grow and develop during this exciting time in their life.
