The Cernan Earth and Space Center |
 |
The third graders visited the Cernan Space Center and planetarium to learn more about the planets. The first show took the students on a journey through the solar system explaining the features of each planet. Students also viewed a mini-show simulating a trip to the moon. Planetarium staff answered students' questions after the presentations. The third graders enjoyed this extension to their study of the solar system.

Janet discussed the process of writing a book from idea to publication. She showed the students her own work,a rejection letter, rough sketches by her illustrator, dummy copies, and the final finished book. Her next book will be out this spring.
Janet also conducted a writing workshop with the students. They will continue to work on their own stories in the next weeks. |

Grade 3 Activities in December
.We have been busy wrapping Angel gifts for our Ascension Parish Angel Project, and presenting to our classes for the Traditions Project.
Each third grade student identified a family tradition within their own family then shared that tradition with their classmates in an oral "Show and Tell" presentation. We heard about many wonderful family traditions that included family trips and Christmas traditions.

Students in Room 108 also performed The Strongest One to 107. Our class also performed The Wind and the Sun, an Aesop's Fable. The students constructed their own simple costume and drew a background for each scene.

The third graders in 107 are creating props and presenting the play "The Strongest One" to the third graders in Room 108. Room 108, in turn will present the play to 107 next week.
In this play written by Joseph Bruchac, Little Red Ant learns that everything is stronger than something else. He realizes that even though ants are small, in some ways they are the strongest of all.
This is a Zuni play. Zunis are people of the Southwest who dwell in pueblos. They are famous for their ceremonies, which are designed to give thanks and support all living things, from the largest to the smallest. |
