Participating in Cross Country requires that each student turn in a Registration Form, Medical Form and the $25.00 fee before the first practice. Ascension School supplies the uniform that must be returned at the end of the season.

Cross Country This Fall 2011!
The cross-country team will be running again this year and is open to all students in 5th -8th grade who are interested in a little running and a lot of fun. All soccer players are welcome.

There are five meets (all on Saturday mornings) and the practices will be scheduled Tuesdays and Thursdays from 5PM to 6PM so as not to conflict with soccer. Practices will consist of tempo running, speedwork and games.
The first practice will be Friday August 26th from 5 – 5:45 PM. Meet on the west side of Barry Park (Bring a water bottle). If you have questions or are interested in assisting the team please contact John O'Brien at jmobrien3@gmail.com.

Welcome- our goal is to do a little running and have a lot of fun…. In addition to improving their running technique, participants will learn about exercise physiology and nutrition. Cross Country is unique in that all grades (5th - 8th) practice together.
Coach: John O'Brien
How much running does this involve? There are four meets and eight practices during the regular season. The running increases from 5th to 8th grade. In practice, there will be one day where all the running is short distances and we will work on speed. One the other day, we will run from one to three miles. In the races it is as follows:
5th Grade – 1 mile
6th Grade – 1.5 miles
7th and 8th Grade – 2.0 miles
When is practice? Practice will be on Tuesdays and Thursdays at 5:00 for about one hour, unless there are major conflicts with soccer. Practices will be at Barrie Park.
Bring a water bottle.
What if I play soccer? Runners will be encouraged to go to soccer practice if there is a conflict with cross country practice. Every effort will be made to “squad” soccer players on the cross country team so they can go to the meets on Saturday.
What if I am not a “good” runner? Will I make the team? Will I hurt the team? Everyone makes the team. This is about a little running and a lot of fun…the way the meets work the first five runners on our team count towards our team’s score. You never know when your performance will help the team, so you can be motivated to always try your best!
What is the schedule for the meets? The meets are Saturday mornings at 9 am. You run with students from other schools in the same grade (boys and girls in separate races). You can leave after you have run. See the schedule. |
