In 1912, at the end of the summer, Mother Raphael Armstrong and four of her Ursuline sisters moved from themother house in downstate Illinois to Oak Park where they took up residence in the rooms
designated as their convent home on the second floor of the new school building. Within days, they had registered 240 students, some of them of high school age, and opened the
doors of Ascension School.
So began the community that now begins to celebrate one hundred years of Catholic education in South Oak Park. The Ursulines had been given a directive by their foundress,
St. Angela Merici, to "build
community" wherever they are; our celebration is testament to the success of their mission.

The Centennial belongs to all of us: to students and their families, to faculty and staff, to parishioners and neighbors and alumni.
Primary among our goals is that during the course of our year-long celebration, we will have programs or events that include each branch of our extended family. Some events are alumni-focused, some student-focused, some for adults and some for children.
